Quick Thoughts
InKind has had a number of Amex Offers and other discounts over the past couple of years. I ignored it for a while, but then finally signed up and have enjoyed the couple of chances I’ve had to use it.
For those unaware, InKind is a payment app. Participating restaurants allow you to settle your restaurant tab within the app, eliminating the need to give your credit card to the server (and wait for them to return with it). I was skeptical as to how useful this would be, but I’ve used it a couple of times now thanks to generous promotions and I’ve found it relatively easy to use.
The drawback is of course that you’re limited to the restaurants that offer the ability to pay via InKind. They certainly aren’t everywhere and as such I’ve only found it useful when visiting major cities (and even then, the footprint is very limited). Still, I have a reservation at Jaleo DC in a couple of months and I’ll be happy to use InKind to settle the tab thanks to credits I’ve built up through discounted gift cards and referrals. I’ve also gotten targeted for some good promotions now and then.
I don’t need more InKind credit right now, but if I had an imminent reservation at a restaurant that takes it, I’d probably be buying a gift card here to save 40% even if it means missing out on a restaurant category bonus.
