Amex Gold limiting 4x restaurants to $50K in spend annually starting 1/1/25

Eagle-eyed Grant of Travel With Grant has caught an interesting development on the Amex Gold card: starting on January 1, 2025, you’ll still earn 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide, but only up to a maximum of $50,000 in purchases per calendar year.

This change probably won’t move the needle for most readers as I imagine that most of us aren’t spending north of $50K per year on restaurant purchases. However, for big time dining enthusiasts and/or those who might use their card for a big event like a wedding or other large catering bill, it’s worth knowing about this cap moving forward. Grant caught the following wording on a recent Gold card statement:

Effective January 1, 2025, you will continue to earn 3 additional points (for a total of 4 points) for each dollar of eligible purchases charged at restaurants worldwide now on up to the first $50,000 of these purchases per calendar year.

Keep in mind that if you really needed more than $50K in capacity, it would theoretically be possible to downgrade a Platinum card to have a second Gold card or keep in mind that “restaurants” is one of the eligible categories on the Business Gold card, which offers 4x on the two qualifying categories in which you spend the most each billing cycle up to $150K per year.
